Take your home from drab to fab with these 2021 design trends

As the saying goes, out with the old and in with the new. 2021 will hopefully bring us plenty of “new” in the form of opportunities, beginnings, and trends. See what tastemakers are forecasting as the most fashion-forward interior design trends for this year.

For the past few years, midcentury modern motifs have ruled the real estate scene. With clean lines, geometric shapes, and muted colors, this retro-inspired look was all the rage. And while designers are still infatuated with pieces that pay homage to the past, trendsetters are moving past the 50s and 60s and embracing elements inspired by the 80s. Bold colors, rich textures, and eclectic pieces will be prioritized over sleek, more minimalistic aesthetics.

“The homes I show and sell that really resonate with buyers are ones that incorporate more diverse pieces into their design,” explained Liz Richards, broker associate with LIV Sotheby’s International Realty. “For example, a family that I worked with displayed tapestries and pottery from their extensive travels through Brazil and Africa – unique items that you could not find at a typical décor store.”

Speaking of texture, some old classics are slated to make a major come back in 2021. Expect to see a lot more rattan, wicker, and caned furniture incorporated into interior designs this year. The natural, more relaxed look of the woven material adds an organic feel to your space.

If your walls could talk, what would they say? Make them a conversation starter by adding a bold wallpaper with bright hues or daring prints. Wallpaper, especially temporary peel-and-stick options, is a low commitment way to add some personality to any room in your home.

“Think big florals, abstract shapes, and colors,” commented Richards. “Fun spins on the traditional are in. You can even get creative with the placement, like adding wallpaper to a ceiling.”
