The classic architecture and pitched roof of this compact corner terraced residence designed in the 1950s sealed the deal for designer Kelvin Teo.
Drawn by the charm of its architecture, he retained its composition.
“I would been on the lookout for property in District 13 for a while,” says Mr Teo, 45, founder of Room Feeling Studio. “The property was also in its initial point out, which was one of my standards.”
This gave him the freedom to completely transform the home – situated in the Sennett estate with a crafted-up ground region of 1,900 sq ft – to his taste. The renovation, which took a year and 8 months, value $450,000. Mr Teo, his wife and their two children moved in late very last yr.
He dressed the facade with grey bricks and metal cladding, immediately supplying it a contemporary update.
Earlier the main entrance, he overhauled the total format of the ground floor, developing an open-principle communal room with a “fireplace” cupboard beside the sofa, and applied acoustic wall panelling with a fish-scale sample for the aspect wall.
Its installation was not with no demo and mistake. The similar went for concealing the lavatory door, fridge, pantry and storeroom doorway, which he tackled with L-shaped wooden panelling.
The home furnishings and inside designer says: “My design and style narrative was to produce a distinct principle for each and every degree that was dependent on a monochromatic palette. Each and every house kinds its very own persona and identity and its topic was increased as a result of the use of natural materials with strong, noticeable textures.”
The dark flooring gives the ground amount a daring, masculine vibe.
A range of textures – such as the burnt wooden-textured flooring, oak veneer wood strips, marble surfaces and acoustic wall panelling – enrich the setting.
Mr Teo’s Paper Fold chair, which gained Layout of the Year at the President’s Structure Award in 2009, adds a splash of color.
Farther in, the kitchen has a floating island counter that is related to a pull-out eating desk.
In addition to comprehensive-peak home windows, a glass roof allows in extra all-natural mild. Mr Teo states: “I like the sensation of standing in the rain without having receiving moist. That’s the thought of owning the glass roof. I get to knowledge the raindrops.”
The second stage, with epoxy flooring and brick partitions doused in white, is a double-volume space.
Up earlier mentioned, the pitched ceiling sits above good wood planks salvaged from other initiatives.
He says: “I have normally liked interiors with attic roofs. It offers the psychological, laid-back again and cosy come to feel of a cottage, a farmhouse or a summer time house.”
The sleeping house is in the loft and reachable by a narrow flight of actions. Encouraged by the Danish thought of hygge, its wooden-textured vinyl flooring complements the wooden-clad ceiling.
With this residence, Mr Teo states he relished the troubles of birthing new suggestions and applying his experiments.
“As a designer, the nature of my job is to experiment with new matters and to obstacle myself. It is really usually fascinating to make distinctive patterns – even when I know I will be obtaining my fingers dirty.”
