In 2019, architects Olivier Garce and Clio Dimofski were dispatched from Paris to New York to open up a branch of Pierre Yovanovitch’s layout organization. They moved into a a single-bed room condominium in the prewar brownstone in the West Village in which I also reside. But we’d never ever in fact achieved, right up until my good friend the designer Brock Forsblom and I witnessed Garce — whom he knew — and some mates moving intriguing new furniture, which turned out to be designed out of lava stone, into the apartment. With masks in spot, we stopped to chat and invited ourselves inside of.

The home furniture that had caught our eye was by Ian Felton, who later informed me he’d been motivated, in component, by the animism of objects in Pre-Columbian lifestyle. “Over the previous calendar year and a fifty percent, I’ve been seeking to best glazing Lava Stone with a procedure related to ceramics glazing,” he suggests. “I’ve been able to glaze massive lava-stone volumes, turning a tremendous-utilitarian content like lava stone into this truly intriguing compound, type of like coral underwater the colour prospects are infinite.”
But it turns out, my neighbors weren’t always likely to get to live with that home furnishings for pretty extended. The pandemic has manufactured the trade of concepts in the layout entire world considerably extra tricky. The gallery openings and exhibits, and the related social gatherings that start and element new get the job done, disappeared. So they had made a decision to make their personal in a cozy residence atmosphere that was safe and sound but even now enabled individuals to see new get the job done.
Garce and Dimofski, with the support of a group of mates and gallerists, along with the photographer Sean Davidson, turned their condominium as a living showcase for design.
“The most important intention was to carry jointly a group of mates, but it was also to existing Ian’s new collection in a dwelling atmosphere,” claims Garce. Felton claims, “The activity was to make new is effective, assemble overlooked parts, and open up up conversation as to how these components would live alongside one another in the exact spot. Clio and I dwell on the 3rd floor of a gentle-flooded prewar brownstone, the perfect stage for these kinds of a collaboration.”
Apart from Felton, Garce borrowed work from Environmentally friendly River Tasks, R & Enterprise, and Gabriella Picone, among the other individuals. Garce suggests of this notion that it will continue to evolve as time goes on in distinct destinations.
